Pa. Capitol Police fully equipped with body cameras, Shapiro administration announces

Pennsylvania Capitol Police are now fully equipped with body cameras, the Shapiro administration announced Monday.

The Department of General Services began implementing the technology in January, assigning each officer an individual body camera, which will be integrated with in-car cameras used since 2016. The administration said the installation of upgraded vehicle equipment is already underway, with expectations for completion in early spring.

Pennsylvania Capitol Police Superintendent Joseph Jacob called the technology “a welcome addition.”

“The implementation of body cameras will ensure agency policies are being followed in interactions with the public and will help us identify areas where we can improve on carrying out our duties as officers,” Jacob said in a statement. “The Pennsylvania Capitol Police will continue to work to ensure transparency and to strengthen the relationship between our officers and the community they serve.”

Department of General Services acting Secretary Reggie McNeil said the addition of body cameras “adds another layer of transparency, accountability, and safety for both the public and our officers.”

“Everyone who works in or visits the Capitol Complex deserves a safe environment,” McNeil said.
